Hallmarking is mandatory for gold jewellery across most of India, and the rules have tightened steadily.

Registration

Every jeweller selling hallmarked gold needs a BIS registration. It is done online and does not expire, but your details must stay current.

HUID

Each piece carries a six-digit alphanumeric Hallmark Unique Identification. It is applied at the Assaying and Hallmarking Centre, not by you.

What a buyer should see

The BIS mark, the purity in karat and fineness, and the six-digit HUID. Nothing else is required.

Staffing implication

Most mid-sized jewellers now keep someone trained on hallmarking and stock reconciliation. It has quietly become a standing role.
