Difference Between 22K, 18K and 14K Gold — A Guide for Jewellery Staff
4 September 2026 · JewelTasks Team
Every person on a showroom floor is asked this, and a clear answer builds trust immediately.
The numbers
22K is 91.6% gold. 18K is 75%. 14K is 58.5%. The rest is alloy, which is what gives the metal strength and colour.
Where each is used
22K for traditional Indian jewellery and investment pieces. 18K for diamond and stone-set jewellery, because it holds stones better. 14K for daily wear and export markets.
Explaining it well
Higher purity is softer, not better. A diamond ring in 22K will loosen its stones. Saying this plainly is what customers remember.
